Project: A Visual Pattern Language of Demos

Welcome!

This project aims to create a visual pattern language for demos, based onthe work of Christopher Alexander, and inspired by the Game Design Patterns project, which draws heavily on the work of C. Alexander. Design patterns are also heavily used today in computer science.

We will use the theory of design patterns to look at a selection of substantial demos and intros (Please feel free to comment on our selection at any time). Based on this study we will then use the Wiki structure to create a catalogue, or an alphabet if you will, of the patterns we find and their relations to each other. The purpose of this is to provide an overview of the nature of demos and their raison d'etre, based on what they actually are, visually speaking, rather than studying them from a sociological or historical standpoint. We will of course include a background on the culture where demos are produced, but it will not be the main part of the corpus.

This site contains swedish and english, pretty randomly. Feel free to comment in whatever language. If you change content, please try to keep the original language, if possible.

Contribute!

We highly value your contribution! You don't need an account to edit our sites, but it sure would help if you create one! Currently we are specifically asking for comments on:

Project Status

  • Started the outline of the pattern template
  • Putting together the last parts of the theory
  • Putting together a focus group
  • Trying to find a working methodology for watching the demos

Essay

This project is one part a collection of wiki pages and one part an essay as part of a masters thesis, which you can find here (work in progress, and it's all in swedish, except for the Abstract):
